John F. O’Laughlin House Determination of Eligibility

Location:

La Jolla, California

The John F. O’Laughlin House was determined eligible for the San Diego Register of Historical Resources under HRB Criterion C as a representative example of the Contemporary architectural style. The style became popular in San Diego in the 1950s and 1960s and includes features like strong roof forms, attached garages, horizontal massing, large windows, and the creative use of traditional materials like wood, brick, and metal. Here, the vertical wood screen, large glass windows, and slab-style front doors are subtle but distinctive design features of the Contemporary style. This project included a Determination of Eligibility only; the house is not currently designated.
