Coastal Craftsman

Location:

La Jolla, California

This Coastal Craftsman two-story residence uses a mix of natural materials to create its complexity in detail. The roof and exterior walls have stained wood shingles accented by white trimmed doors and windows, grey cobblestone walls, and brick porches, sidewalks and driveway. The 4,429 sq. ft. house is situated towards the front of the 9,100 sq. ft. property to allow for a sizable private backyard. The outdoor area features an expansive porch with fireplace and trellis that leads down to a patio with pool and Jacuzzi. The alignment of French doors and windows with transoms along with the flow of interior to exterior spaces allow the ocean breezes and light to fill the house.

The clients, a family of three, wanted to create a home that was comfortable and reflected their personal style with touches of maritime and coastal motifs. The house maximizes ocean views and creates as much natural light and ventilation as possible. The clients needed to maximize the active outdoor lifestyle while maintaining a level of privacy.
