City of San Diego Historic Site No. 1226, Ernest and Margaret Leighton House
Location:
Kensington-Talmadge, San Diego, CaliforniaThe Ernest and Margaret Leighton House is a significant Spanish Colonial Revival house in Kensington Heights. Original fabric and integrity illustrate the unique finishing details used in this style by many builders in the Kensington Heights subdivision. Features such as the asymmetrical façade, half-barrel red clay tile roof, and narrow eaves make this a unique example of the architectural style found in this subdivision. The house further illustrates the Spanish influenced architectural theme designated for this neighborhood by the Davis-Baker Company, by creating visual conformity without interfering in individualization. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps and the residential building record also indicate that the original house footprint remains intact. The overall craftsmanship and integrity of the house warrants designation under HRB Criterion C for architecture as an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Revival Architecture.
