International Travels

Ione R. Stiegler

Moroccan Travels-
Ione just returned from a trip to Morocco where she both attended the General Assembly 2019 meeting of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS a subset of UNESCO) and presented at the ICOMOS Advisory Committee Scientific Symposium. She collaborated with Vonn Marie May, a landscape historian, and cultural landscape specialist, to present a poster entitled “Culture and Environment: A Case Study of the Washington Irrigated Colony Rural Historic Landscape”

Ione shares the following, “We had the good fortune to visit many areas of Morocco, the Atlantic coast, High Atlas Mountains, Kasbahs, date and palm oases, the Sahara desert and four main towns of Marrakech, Fez, Rabat, and Casablanca. The country holds a remarkable wealth of amazing architecture. The examples of earthen architecture seemed to each be vying with the next to outdo each other. Before I went a friend described for me the architecture as being “like a geode rock…rough and craggy on the outside and a colorful jewel on the inside.” It was truly an apt description. Around every corner was a new cultural or aesthetic experience. …and yes….we had our cliche camel ride in the Sahara desert.”

Scroll down and enjoy some of her travel shots from Moroccan & learn about her upcoming December Saudia Arabia Trip!

Saudia Arabia Trip-
Off to her next exotic destination in December 2019, Ione will travel to Saudi Arabia on behalf of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). She has been requested through the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to carry out an urgent joint UNESCO World Heritage Centre-ICOMOS advisory mission.
