City of San Diego Historic Site No. 1229, J.W. and Dora Fleming/Hurlburt and Tifal House

Location:

South Park, San Diego, California

The J.W. and Dora Fleming/Hurlburt and Tifal House was designed by Master Architect Ralph E. Hurlburt and constructed by Master Builder Charles H. Tifal in 1924. The house is a significant example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style, built by Hurlburt and Tifal in the South Park neighborhood at the beginning of their branded partnership. The house is indicative of their work ethos of integrity, honesty, and quality. Design elements such as the irregular U-shaped plan, combination roof styles, facade setbacks, and wall buttresses demonstrate their knowledge of the style and the influence of the region’s history. The house was designated under HRB Criterion C and D by IS Architecture in 2016. In 2018, the house was also designated a contributing member to the newly-formed South Park Historic District by the City of San Diego.
